Sister Lata,
Hope all is well with you ! Suddenly I have fallen in a predicament. Only you can save my life out of this difficult situation. Nothing to worry about, but also the same time, something to worry about !!! Listen, for the first time in my life I am going to serve the brothers in the (Indian) armed forces. You already know that I never take part in any functions or gatherings, but this is one occassion which I am not able to avoid… Yes, I was saying that, if you keep ( the recording of ) today’s song, on a different date convenient to you, then I will never forget your favour.. This is a request from a brother to his sister !!! I hope that you have understood my case. I am very fond of singing for ‘Maharaaj’ Kalyanji-Anandji, and if I have you as a co-singer, then it is even better !! This is such a nice bond of love…it should not break..angrezii mein likhnaa chahtaa thaa magar ek Hindustani hone ke naate maine Hindi mein hii likhnaa uchit samjhaa.. ( Please turn-over this letter )

I know that you will have problems, but for my sake try to make it happen by any means.

What should I write more…just that, you handle everything…

I had telephoned in the night but you were fast asleep. I did not think it right, to wake you up….

Ok sister…would meet once I am back.

My love … respect to the elders… loving blessings to the small.

Only your brother…

Kishore da
“gaDbaDi”

PS –
* I have made two portraits. Hope that you like them – Kishore
* Keep the recording on any date of December 2, 3, 4, 5 and any suitable time.

    Hi Pavan & Kaustubh,

Congrats on getting Lata Mangeshkar to share this letter with you! A big exclusive, for sure.

    Two points intrigue me:

1 We get to see yet another aspect of KK’s multi-faceted talents: But do the sketches mean anything or are they just random (but serious) doodling? Seems to me to be two carefully considered, contrasting drawings.

2 More interesting is the date: a request to defer a recording with Kalyanji-Anandji, from November 1967.

If recorded, this would have been their first duet. It did not, and the next one came no earlier than in 1970, with ‘kehdo kehdo’ in Sachha Jhootha. And after that in 1971, Maryada (chup ke se dil de).

So, the recording for November 1967 could have been:

    a) A mixed song?
    b) An aborted film/unknown number?
    c) One of two films above, whose release was much delayed?
    d) Or, K-A went with someone else instead of Kishore?

    Regards,

    Robin

  4. Excellent Pavanbhai & Kaustubh!

I can see two songs behind Kishoreda’s beautiful sketches :

    1. Kashti Ka Khamosh Safar Hai
    2. Chhota Sa Ghar Hoga

Glad to see the legendary Robin Bhatt’s comment here !

    Cheers,
    Qamaal

      Hi Qamaal,

Bhai, bade ‘Sikander’ nikle aap to!

Those two songs you name are exactly what the sketches illustrate.

I was reading too much into them, thinking they might be related to his military entertainment tour.

      Regards,

Robin (Legend? In his own mind!)
